DESCRIPTION:The International Day of Nonviolence was established by the United Nations on the anniversary of the birth of Mahatma Gandhi in order to promote the ‘universal relevance of the principle of non-violence’ and the objective ‘to secure a culture of peace\, tolerance\, understanding and non-violence’. \nLast year was the 150th birthday of Gandhi. Click here for video of the UN Secretary-General’s speech at the special UN commemoration event. \nThis year on Oct 2\, 2020 the following key events will take place: \n\nVirtual event on Phoenix Settlement – Recognition as National Heritage Site \n\nThis high-level webinar event will celebrate Gandhiji’s first ashram the Phoenix Settlement being declared a National Heritage Site by the South Africa Heritage Resources Agency(SAHARA). Click here for more information and to register. \n\nUN High Level Meeting on the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons\n\nThe UN General Assembly will hold a High Level Meeting on Oct 2 to commemorate the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons. Speakers will be mostly high-level government representatives\, Prime Ministers\, Presidents\, Foreign Ministers and UN Ambassadors. However\, the President of the UN General Assembly has also invited two representatives of global civil society to address the meeting. They are Saber Chowdhury MP\, PNND Co-President and Honorary President of the Inter-Parliamentar Union\, and Vanda Proskova (Czech Republic)\, Vice-Chair of the PragueVision Institute for Sustainable Security.
