SUMMARY:International Day of Peace Observance
DESCRIPTION:Each year the International Day of Peace is observed around the world on 21 September. The UN General Assembly has declared this as a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace\, through observing 24 hours of non-violence and cease-fire. \nThis year\, the theme is “Shaping Peace Together”. It has been clearer than ever that we are not each other’s enemies. Rather\, our common enemy is a tireless virus that threatens our health\, security and very way of life. COVID-19 has thrown our world into turmoil and forcibly reminded us that what happens in one part of the planet can impact people everywhere. \nCelebrate the day by spreading compassion\, kindness and hope in the face of the pandemic. Stand together with the UN against attempts to use the virus to promote discrimination or hatred. \nGlobal ceasefire: In March\, UN Secretary-General António Guterres called on all warring parties to lay down their weapons and focus on the battle against this unprecedented global pandemic. While the message is intended for armed parties\, solidarity and cooperation across borders\, sectors and generations are also needed to win this new fight against the worst public health crisis of our time. \nJOIN THE VIRTUAL OBSERVANCE:   \nThe event will be on Microsoft Teams Live. Click here to join. Click here for instructions \nThe online Student Observance will begin with a dialogue between United Nations Messengers of Peace and young people around the world on the United Nations Secretary-General’s call for a global ceasefire and the importance of coming together peacefully to turn the COVID-19 crises into an opportunity for peace and inclusivity. The Peace Bell Ceremony will follow\, featuring the participation of the United Nations Secretary-General\, the President of the General Assembly and the Permanent Representative of Japan to the United Nations. There will also be a performance by the Universal Hip Hop Museum. \nIf you have questions please contact: education-outreach@un.orgAir Force 1

SUMMARY:UN Day for nuclear abolition: What's happening? What can you do?
DESCRIPTION:An UP Convergence 2020 discussion on Monday September 14 in preparation for the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons (UN Nuclear Abolition Day). \nThe discussion will highlight some of the connections between peace\, climate protection\, sustainable development\, COVID-19 pandemic and nuclear disarmament\, as well as discuss some of the actions and events for the UN Day for Nuclear Abolition\, which takes place on September 26. \nThe UN General Assembly established Nuclear Abolition Day in 2013 out of concern by the overwhelming majority of UN member countries at the risk of a nuclear war and the ongoing nuclear arms race. There are over 14\,000 nuclear weapons in the world\, many of them primed and ready for launch in minutes. \nAbout $100 billion per year is being spent to design\, develop and deploy nuclear weapons. This money should instead be spent on climate protection\, sustainable development\, public health and ‘building back better’ from the COVID-19 pandemic. \nThe zoom discussion on September 14 will be lead by Vanda Proskova\, Vice-Chair of the PragueVision Institute for Sustainable Security and Member of the Abolition 2000 Youth Network\, and Alyn Ware\, Global Coordinator of Parliamentarians for Nuclear Non-proliferation and Disarmament and Member of the World Future Council. \nThe discussion is part of the Peace and Spirituality Convergence Room of  UP Convergence 2020\, an 8-Day Multi-Zoom Global Online Summit on Peace which started on September 11 and continues until the UN International Day for Peace on September 21. \nClick here for more information and the link to join the dicussion.Air Jordan 1
