Call on goverments for the UN Day for Elimination of Nuclear Weapons, Sep 26.

September 26 is the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons.

#WeThePeoples2020 is hosting a global civil society event to commemorate the day. The UN General Assembly will hold a High Level Meeting on the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons on Oct 2.

UNFOLD ZERO encourages parliamentarians, mayors, religious leaders, youth, civil society leaders and anyone else to call on your governments to use the day and the UN High Level event to advance nuclear disarmament.

About the UN Day for the Elimination of Nuclear Weapons

The UN General Assembly established the day to enhance public awareness about the threat posed to humanity by nuclear weapons and the necessity for their total elimination.

The UN General Assembly resolution establishing the day (Resolution 68/32) calls for nuclear weapons to be eliminated through negotiations on a ‘comprehensive convention on nuclear weapons to prohibit their possession, development, production, acquisition, testing, stockpiling, transfer and use or threat of use, and to provide for their destruction.’ These negotiations would require the participation of the countries possessing the weapons.

The resolution also calls for effective incremental measures to stop the nuclear arms race and take nuclear disarmament steps.

Call to governments

UNFOLD ZERO encourages you to call on your President, Prime Minister or Foreign Minister to speak at the UN High Level Meeting on the Elimination of Nuclear Weapons and:

a) affirm that a nuclear war should never be fought;
b) call for the elimination of nuclear weapons by 2045;
c) support the end of investments in the nuclear weapons industry.
