International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons

September 26, 2020

In 2013, the UN General Assembly (UNGA) declared September 26 to be the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons. The aims of the day are to enhance public awareness about the threat posed to humanity by nuclear weapons and the necessity for their total elimination.

The UN General Assembly will hold a High Level Meeting on Oct 2 to commemorate the day. Speakers will be mostly high-level government representatives, Prime Ministers, Presidents, Foreign Ministers and UN Ambassadors. However, the President of the UN General Assembly has also invited two representatives of global civil society to address the meeting. They are Saber Chowdhury MP, PNND Co-President and Honorary President of the Inter-Parliamentar Union, and Vanda Proskova (Czech Republic), Vice-Chair of the PragueVision Institute for Sustainable Security. The event can be watched on UNTV.

#WeThePeoples2020 hosted a global civil society webinar on Sep 26 to commemorate the day. It ran in two parts over 10 hours with presentations, video messages, art, music, workshops and panels. Click here for the full program.

UNFOLD ZERO is providing a global platform for Sep 26 actions. These include a social media action to Move the Nuclear Weapons Money and a message to send to your government calling on them to take action for nuclear disarmament at the UN High Level meeting.

Action: Encourage your Prime Minister/President to participate in the UN High-Level Meeting on October 2 and use the occasion to call on nuclear-armed states to pledge to never launch a nuclear war, and to commit to the elimination of nuclear weapons by 2045, the 100th anniversary of the UN.Air Jordan 1
